The Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Role That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Since my friend was exploring starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had booked a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and started talking to fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I told him that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where anything feels possible – she declared: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
