Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
