Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
