Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Police state they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then discovered many other marked cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials state early analysis indicate the liquid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
A senior official stated the vandalism rendered him without words and needed to be solved quickly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
