A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
