A Forecasting Platform User Made $436K from Bets Predicting Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Predictions
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the month's conclusion increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
A particular user, which joined the platform recently and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Probability Spikes Before Announcement
Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
However the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in positions just before the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.
A handful of other traders also made large payouts from predicting the capture.
Legal Questions Intensifies
Politicians are growing concerned.
A bill put forward on recently would prevent government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
